Hello, I am Josh Sykes, a photographer and documentary filmmaker, based in Margate on the Kent Coast since 2025.
I shoot exclusively on film, using a second hand Olympus OM-1 from the 1970s. I love both the texture and grain of film photos, and the meditative, slow process of creating them: heading out with no particular agenda, no screens or distracting technology, and capturing moments and scenes that appear before me. The results often surprise and inspire me - and I hope they might inspire you too.
My first exhibition runs at Job Muscroft Gallery in the heart of Margate’s Old Town from 1 - 30 April 2026 - open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through April, plus Easter Monday. There will be a Private View on Friday 10th April from 5 - 7pm - please stop by for snax, drinks and pics!
I will be exhibiting and selling prints from my photographic series “Visions of Margate”, a sort of visual diary of my time exploring and discovering my new home town, from August 2025 to the present. Like so many other nature-deprived and soul-crushed ex-Londoners who find themselves here, I’m inspired and renewed by the space, the scale and the sea. This exhibition celebrates these special qualities of Margate.
I hope you find something in my work that resonates with you - and please feel free to reach out for any reason - including if you’d like to support the artist by buying a print!
